Chiang Mai, a popular destination in northern Thailand, is known for its rich culture, stunning temples, lush mountains, and vibrant night markets. While traveling there is generally safe, staying up to date on routine and travel vaccinations is essential to protect yourself from preventable diseases. The recommended vaccines depend on the risks associated with your trip activities. Below are the key vaccines to consider before your visit to Chiang Mai.

1. Japanese Encephalitis (JE)

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe brain inflammation. The first recorded epidemic in Chiang Mai Valley and northern Thailand occurred in 1969. Although reported cases have decreased in recent years, JE remains a serious concern due to its potentially severe consequences, particularly for older adults who have never been exposed to the virus. The estimated risk of JE infection for travelers staying in rural areas is between 1 in 5,000 and 1 in 200,000 per week. While short-term urban travelers have a lower risk, those visiting rural or agricultural areas, especially during the rainy season (May to October), should strongly consider vaccination. Travelers engaging in outdoor activities such as trekking, visiting elephant sanctuaries, or staying in rural villages for an extended period are at a higher risk. The JE vaccine is particularly recommended for those staying in Thailand for over a month or those frequently exposed to mosquito bites.

2. Rabies

Rabies is present in Chiang Mia,Thailand and stray dogs, cats in temples and tourist attractions can carry the virus. While the overall risk of rabies from being bitten or licked is estimated at 1–4%, it is a fatal disease if left untreated. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is highly recommended for travelers planning outdoor activities such as hiking or visiting animal-populated areas. Children are also at higher risk since they are more likely to interact with animals and may not report bites or scratches. The pre-exposure vaccine simplifies treatment in case of an exposure, reducing the number of required post-exposure shots.

3. Typhoid and Hepatitis A

Although Chiang Mai has relatively good sanitation, consuming street food, raw fruits, or drinks with ice can still pose a risk of typhoid and hepatitis A. Both diseases are caused by bacteria or viruses transmitted through contaminated food and water, making them a concern for travelers in Thailand.

Vaccination against typhoid and hepatitis A is especially recommended for those who plan to eat at local food stalls or visit rural areas where sanitation may be less reliable. These vaccines provide strong protection against two common travel-related infections.

4. Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

Influenza circulates year-round in Thailand, with peak seasons during the rainy and cool months (May to October). Because travelers often come into close contact with crowds in markets, temples, and public transportation, getting a flu vaccine is highly recommended. The flu vaccine helps prevent severe illness, particularly for individuals with underlying health conditions. If you are visiting Chiang Mai during the flu season, vaccination can provide an extra layer of protection against infection.

Final Recommendations

In addition to these vaccines, travelers should be up to date on routine immunizations such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), varicella, hepatitis B, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (Tdap). Taking preventive measures such as using insect repellent, practicing good hand hygiene, and avoiding direct contract with stray animal. Consulting a travel health specialist 4–6 weeks before departure ensures you receive the necessary vaccinations and health advice tailored to your itinerary.
